사람은 정답이 될 수 없다

영국 드라마 ‘빌어먹을 세상 따위’의 주인공은 대책 없는 10대들이다. 제임스는 스스로를 사이코패스라 믿고 있고, 앨리사는 사람들을 열 받게 하는 재주가 있다. 좌충우돌하는 두 사람이 동반 가출했으니 그 앞날이 순탄할 리 없다.

둘은 우여곡절 끝에 앨리사의 아버지를 찾아간다. 앨리사는 엄마와 이혼 후 따로 살아온 아버지를 “로빈 후드 같은 사람”이라고 믿었지만 막상 만나보니 찌질한 동네 건달일 뿐이다. 오랫동안 못 보고 살면서 환상을 키워온 것이다. 앨리사는 뒤늦은 깨달음을 토로한다.

“사람은 정답이 될 수 없어요(People can’t be answers). 더 많은 질문을 만들 뿐이죠. 예를 들면 이런 질문이요. ‘아빠는 왜 이렇게 형편없지?’”

완벽한 인간은 없는데도 누군가를 이상적인 존재로 여긴다는 건 스스로의 눈을 가리는 일이다. 그렇게 사람을 정답으로 삼으려는 이유는 쉽고 편리하기 때문이다. 복잡하게 생각하느라 에너지를 쓰는 대신 ‘피리 부는 사나이’ 뒤만 졸졸 따라가면 된다.

그래도 좌표가 되는 사람이 있으면 좋은 거 아니냐고? 물론이다. 단, 주의할 필요가 있다. 좌표를 가끔 재조정해야 한다. ‘어제의 지도로 오늘의 길을 찾아선 안 된다’고 하지 않는가. 

삶은 수학 문제 푸는 것과 다르지 않다. 답이 뭔지 아는 것보다 자기 힘으로 그 답을 구하는 것이 훨씬 중요하다.

하나 더. 당신이 정답이라 여기는, 바로 그 사람도 힘들어진다. 정답도 아닌데 정답 노릇을 해야 하니 얼마나 부담스럽고 피곤하겠는가. 시즌 2에서 제임스는 앨리사에게 “미안하다”고 사과한다. “뭐가?” “널 정답으로 삼으려고 했던 거.”

누군가를 정답으로 착각했다가 실망하고, 다시 다른 정답을 좇아 헤매는 것은 어리석은 짓이다. 

누구도 정답이 될 수 없다는 사실을 받아들일 때 비로소 진정한 자유, 진정한 만남은 시작된다.

분노와 복수를 미화하는 영화, 드라마가 인기다. 주연과 조연 구분 없이 욕설을 대사마다 후렴처럼 붙이며 사소한 일에도 화를 내고 싸운다. 죄책감 없이 마약을 하고 주먹과 칼을 휘두르며 남을 괴롭히고 온갖 비행을 일삼는다. 그 후 피해자는 폭력과 살인을 계획, 사주하고 가해자를 파멸시킨다. 시청자는 통쾌한 복수라며 환호한다.

사법이 불공정해 보일수록 대중은 사적 복수에 공감한다. 상대적으로 작은 죄를 지은 사람은 큰 벌을 받는데, 어떤 사람들은 큰 죄를 짓고서도 별별 특권을 누리며 세상의 주인공처럼 살아간다. 나쁜 짓을 잘 할수록 떵떵거릴 수 있다는 인식이 굳어지면, 악을 모방하고 싶은 것과는 별개로 인간의 정의감은 사적 제재가 유일한 해법이라 믿는다. 피해자의 감정에 몰입한 관객은 저마다 사형선고를 내리고 가해자를 해치는 또 다른 가해자 즉, 살인자, 폭력 집단, 킬러 편에 선다. 하지만 ‘죽어 마땅한 사람’이라 생각한 사람을 죽이는 것도 엄연한 범죄다.

장 발장의 도둑질을 용서하고 새로운 인생을 살게 한 비앵브뉘 주교는 산적이 출몰하는 산골 마을에 간 적 있다. 위험하다고 모두가 말렸지만 주교는 소임을 무사히 마친 뒤 산적에게 선물까지 받아 들고 내려온다. ‘무서운 건 산적이 아니라 영혼을 파괴하는 편견과 악덕’이라 말한 주교는 장 발장을 변화시키고 그 결과, 그를 집요하게 쫓던 자베르의 삶에도 영향을 미친다.

얼마 전 강남 한복판에서 여성이 납치돼 살해당했다. 투자 손실에 대한 보복으로 드라마처럼 살인을 사주, 청부한 사건이었다. 선과 악은 우리의 선택을 기다린다. 그러나 착하게 살면 바보가 된다며 우리는 너무 자주 원한과 복수에만 눈과 마음, 시간과 열정을 할애하며 살아간다.
